Many children are being diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes today. It’s very important that you discuss your child’s health with their teachers and caregivers. They will need to know this information concerning your child so that they will know what to do if anything happens while they are at school. If your child has to have any insulin injections, it is important to know if the school nurse is able to administer these, as well as checking your child’s blood sugar. While at school your child is in their care and you want them to get the best care wherever they may be.

Diabetes is not only a health problem of adults. It’s also one of the leading causes of health risks among children today. When a child is diagnosed with diabetes it does not mean that they can no longer live life to it’s fullest. They can still run and play just like other children and they can be involved in just as many extracurricular activities as other kids may be. For the most part, children diagnosed with diabetes can lead very normal lives.

Recent studies have shown that depression in some people can actually cause diabetes. Depression hurts, in more ways than one. It is not uncommon for people who get depressed to overeat and withdraw from their normal day-to-day activities. Many people suffering from depression may not feel like getting out and exercising. Because of the lifestyle changes that can result from depression, it is possible that eventually, a person who is depressed will become diabetic. A domino effect can occur, one thing after another, leading from depression to bad eating habits, decreased activity levels and, eventually, diabetes.

A recent study done in Finland and reported in the medical journal, Lancet, found a 43% reduction in the chance of getting diabetes by making some easy changes in lifestyle. The Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study followed 350 women and 172 men who were considered to be at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
