Diabetes And Your Teeth
The effects of diabetes on a person’s teeth are often overlooked because of all the other health complications that diabetes can cause. Because people with diabetes have high blood sugar levels, they may end up with dental problems. High blood sugar levels may cause the bacteria that can lead to tooth decay to grow at a faster rate. Some individuals with diabetes may not be aware of these facts since it’s often not discussed as much as all the other potential complications related to the disease.
Your teeth are very important to your overall health. If untreated tooth or gum disease is not correctly treated, you could end up losing your natural teeth. This in turn can lead to the use of dentures at a very young age. If you are diabetic you are at a much higher risk for periodontal disease. Being aware of this and regular visits to your dentist for checkups and cleanings becomes very necessary to maintain good dental health.
Any bleeding of your gums, or puffy or red gums may indicate the presence of gingivitis. This is the first stage of many gum diseases. If left untreated permanent damage to your teeth and gums could occur. These symptoms may be very painful. You may need to see your dentist to have your gums checked immediately. Closely monitoring your blood sugar levels on a daily basis will help ensure that you keep your healthy smile.
Regular visits to your dentist and good information about ways to combat gum disease are essential. Daily brushing of your teeth and use of a mouth wash will help prevent the accumulation of tartar and the development of gingivitis. Regular flossing is also an important step in preventing the occurrence of these problems.
Keep in mind that if you are diabetic and suffer from tooth and gum diseases, lack of immediate and proper treatment by your dentist may affect your being able to follow the diabetic diet prescribed by your physician. If you are unable to follow a nutritious diet because of poor dental health, you can develop some other serious health problems. Having good teeth and healthy gums is very important, not only for maintaining your good health, but also to reduce any pain and discomfort caused by your teeth and gums.

Very good points. Being in the Dental Field for more years than I can count, I wanted to add that not all mouth wash products are made the same. Products such as Scope help to freshen breath, but does not kill oral bacteria growth like Listerine does. By far, Listerine is the best mouth wash product, and is recommended highly by dentists.
Patients that have health-related tooth/gum problems, or simply those with poor oral hygiene should ask their dentist about an oral medicated rinse called Peridex.
Flossing is probably the one area that patients just don’t seem to “get”. All the excuses in the world for not flossing (and learning how to floss correctly) will do nothing but keep you in the dentist’s chair getting fillings, root canals, crowns and even dentures. I don’t think your dentist really needs another sports car, do you?

You are correct. I have seen many diabetics with dental problems. With the other symptoms they have to worry about keeping up good dental habits is often overlooked. It is still important to practice good teeth care and even see your dentist a little more often than usual.

Lin, great point about Listerine and Scope. All mouthwashes are not created equal. Listerine has always been the most recommend by our dentist.

Many parents want to hide what goes on in their relationship from their children in the desperate hope that their children will do better than they have done. But it doesn’t work like that! It never has.

If you want to see your children have better relationships than you it is necessary to start by helping them learn more about the reality of love and relationships.

Diabetes is something which can be termed as a silent disease because you don’t really get to know about the consequences until you are completely exposed to the disorder. Thx for this post!
